Vanda Miss Joaquim
Vanda Miss Joaquim, which is also known as Singapore Orchid, is Singapore’s national flower. Singapore is the first country to have a hybrid species as its national flower. It is named after Miss Agnes Jaoquim, in whose garden it was first discovered. It was selected as the nation’s national flower in 1981 due to its hardiness and resilience. These two qualities can also be found in the country’s spirit. The flower is a hybrid between Vanda teres of Burma and Vanda hookeriana of Malaysia. It is a rosy-violet flower with a yellow center. The flower can be found in the National Orchid Gardens and Botanic Gardens. Moreover, one park and several roads have been named after it.
This orchid is native to Singapore as well as other Southeast Asian countries. This flower, which is the world’s largest orchid, was discovered in Singapore more than a century ago. Due to the rapid urbanization in the country, this flower is now mostly found in National Orchid Gardens and Botanic Gardens. The flower has red or brown stripes on its yellow and cream petals just like those on a tiger. That is why the flower is called the Tiger Orchid.
It is native to Southeast Asian countries including Singapore. It is usually found in the mangrove areas of the country. The flower is yellow in color with a maroon ‘eye’ and is just like the common hibiscus in shape. It has a very short life as it blooms in the morning and the petals fall off in the same evening or next morning. It was earlier used for medicines and to feed the farm animals by the Malaysian people living in Singapore.
Crape jasmine is native Singapore, India and other nearby areas. It is a white pinwheel-shaped flower with a very nice scent. It has been used to treat various types of diseases including dysentery and heart diseases.
